Music Teacher Coffee Talk · MTCT Episode #67: Refocusing the Conversation on Race in Music Education We want to be clear that we know we cannot proceed with business as usual. The murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and others highlight the long-standing problem of systemic racism in our society. We have work to do as individuals and as educators. The presence of overall white-centered culture in education demands that we all act. It is not enough to be not-racist, we must strive to be anti-racist. We recognize our privilege as white people and know there is work to be done within our own personal education. As music educators, we should do the work of 1. De-centering whiteness as the default culture, 2. Examining and changing our song repertoire, and 3. Carefully question and consider our teaching practices that might harm BIPOC.
