Episode #75: Highs and Lows for Back to School 2020

In this episode, Tanya and Carrie discuss things that have gone well so far this school year, things that have been a challenge, and what we are planning for the next couple of weeks. We are currently back in school with students, socially distant in the music room. This year we have been exploring new ways to play singing games, incorporating more World Music Pedagogy and Social Emotional Learning, and utilizing tech tools daily.

Main Theme

Tarzan the Monkey Man: Carrie has been playing this singing game with older students. Great steady beat practice!

Play this elimination game by having students stand on their assigned spot. The teacher points to students on the steady beat while students pat or tap the beat on their body. Whoever is pointed to on the word "what" chooses a color. The class spells the color while the teacher continues pointing to students on the letters/beat. Whoever gets the last letter is out and sits down. Once out, students can play the beat on an easy-to-clean percussion instrument like rhythm sticks or hand drums.

Google Jamboard: Carrie uses this tech tool to have students draw, write sticky notes, and creatively respond. Can be integrated easily into Google Classroom assignments if you "make a copy for each student"of a response template.

World Music Pedagogy: Tanya has been doing a unit on Brazilian music. Here is one listening example she has been using, having students play along with the rhythmic ostinato.

Social Emotional Learning: Tanya has been using these books to incorporate SEL into music class:

Tanya creates read along videos to share with students in both remote and in-person learning and posts them to her YouTube channel here.

Know Better, Do Better

Tanya talks about the importance of pronouncing our students' names correctly. Here's a little video that drives home the point. Adult ears only!

Work Smarter, Not Harder

Carrie uses this clicker to advance slides in Google Slides, Keynote, or Powerpoint. It also adjusts volume on your laptop PLUS you can use the laser pointer to point the board or around the room, or point to things on students' individual tech devices (ie: click this link here) so you can stay socially distant!
