Episode #162: Peek at our Week (1st Grade)

Main Theme: Peek at Our Week (1st Grade)

Carrie: These songs and activities are in my 1st grade plans this week as we practice fast/slow, prepare and present loud/soft, and do early preparation of beat vs. rhythm (ta and ti-ti)

Engine Engine #9 - to practice fast/slow

Engine, engine #9, going down the railroad line,
If the train should jump the track, do you want your money back?
Yes, no, maybe so!

Tortoise and the Hare - to practice fast/slow

Quickly/Slowly - to practice fast/slow

Quickly, quickly, quickly, goes the little mouse,
Quickly, quickly quickly, all around the house.

Slowly, slowly, crawls the garden snail,
Slowly, slowly, along the wooden rail.

Going on a Bear Hunt - to prepare loud/soft

Grizzly Bear - to prepare and present loud/soft

Lucy Locket - to practice loud/soft
Be sure to read her research about this song too!

Old Gray Cat - to practice loud/soft

Other loud/soft ideas: We play the cymbals for loud parts and finger cymbals for soft parts. I also love to have student conductors use a Hoberman sphere to show loud/soft in a variety of songs.

Tanya: These songs and activities are in my 1st grade plans this week as we review comparatives and get ready to present ta and ti-ti.

Surprise Symphony w/ stretchy band to review loud/soft

Fjaskern - folk dance to review fast/slow

Bee Bee Bumblebee - to practice and mix loud/soft, fast/slow, high/low

Bee, bee, bumblebee,
Stung a man upon his knee,
Stung a pig upon his snout,
I declare that you are out.

Tanya's Musical Opposites posters are available at TpT - great for practicing and mixing comparatives!

Who Stole the Cookies from the Cookie Jar?  - solo opportunity and steady beat practice on the hand drum

Doggy Doggy Where's Your Bone? - prepare ta/ti-ti

Follow the Leader - students improvise body shapes, and then 4-beat rhythms with "short" and "long" to prepare ta/ti-ti

Tip: When presenting ta and ti-ti, use a chant so students don't get mixed up with the melody.

Know Better, Do Better

Carrie talks about idea of using hand bell gloves as an accommodation for students who are apprehensive about taking hands or touching in general.

Work Smarter, Not Harder

Tanya talks about the success of paper lessons plans rather than using a digital version and how she's making that work for her this year. She also talks about how she's taking a step back from using Google Slides for everything in her lessons.

Coda

Carrie is enjoying the "rewind" episodes from the podcast My Favorite Murder

  1. I do Lucy Locket the same way. :-) I also decided to continue using the song in my classroom after reading the dicussions. I love to quickly show the students this video to tell them what a pocket was in relation to 18th century garments. https://youtu.be/5SHcqpSVCwc?si=Ka14sZ8SIB-4EC9x

  2. I look forward to your episodes every other week. I listen as I drive to and from work. I love how you share honestly from your vast experience in the music room. Each time I take away something different that I had not thought of before. For example, I like the idea of using the stretchy band with the Surprise Symphony. I also like how you call the students who are out in Bee Bee Bumblebee the "worker bees" and they have to tap the rhythm. Keep up the good work!

  3. I am a new listener and teaching general music with a Kodaly inspired philosophy for the first time this fall, and this episode was so helpful I'm using several of the songs you mentioned, but hadn't thought to use them in some of the ways you've shared! I look forward to more "Peak at your week" chats. Thanks much!
