Episode #90: End of Year Plans and "Your Future Self Will Thank You"




In this episode, Carrie and Tanya share our end of the year plans and some things that we will do now so our future selves will thank us later.


Main Theme

End of the year plans:
-Individual work and project-based learning works well for older students this time of year (ie keyboards, Soundtrap, ukulele).
-Get outside! Play outside games and try dictation activities with sidewalk chalk.
-Have a singing game choice day on the last day. Check out wheelofnames.com as a fun tool for choosing games to play.

Tasks to do now so your future self will thank you:
-Create a master document where you can keep track of what concept/skills you taught this year in each grade level as well as a song list for each grade to help with planning next summer/fall.
-Give students a survey to see what their favorite activities were from the year.
-Organize and consolidate slide decks from this year.
-Make a note of new activities and new routines from this year that you want to keep for the future.
-Organize and purge obvious clutter. Try to tackle just one area if its too overwhelming to do it all.
-Clean up digital materials and organize your Google Drive. Don't forget to back up your hard copy work to an external hard drive!
-Make a learning plan for the summer. Attend trainings and workshops if you can. 
-Read and join a summer book club!

Know Better, Do Better
This summer Tanya is hoping to do more of a deep dive into the differences between Multicultural Education, Social Justice Education, and the larger umbrella of Culturally Responsive Pedagogy.

Work Smarter, Not Harder
Tips for barred instruments: when setting the tone set or scale on the barred instruments, flip the bars upside down rather than completely removing them or putting them at an angle. That way they won't see the letter name or be tempted to play, but the bars are more secure and easier to change out between classes. Also, consider using the same home tone key for multiple grades so you won't need to change bars between classes, or ask students to change the bars when we are trying to limit their touching of shared materials. F is a great key when working in the pentatone and extended pentatone.
