Episode #106: Why Kodály?

Main Theme

In this episode, Carrie and Tanya discuss why the Kodály philosophy resonates with us and how we incorporate the philosophy into our classrooms. Here are some resources we mention in this episode:

Know Better, Do Better

Tanya reminded us of the importance of giving your students accurate background knowledge behind the musical material you are introducing to your students, especially if that music comes from an unfamiliar country or culture. Consider using maps and pictures to give good visual information to your students.

Work Smarter, Not Harder

Consider taking the time to create a links page on your classroom website that you can use during online learning, as choice time activities for students who finish work earlier, or for sub plans. Giving students pictures as links that show them a glimpse of what a website or activity looks like. Check out Carrie's Online Activities website for some ideas and inspiration.

Coda

Tanya recommends the audiobook Anxious People by Fridrik Backman and narrated by Marin Ireland

Carrie recommends this instrument demonstration video created by the United States Army Field Band for demonstrating woodwind and brass instruments.
