Episode #111: Wrap it Up!

Main Theme: Wrap it Up!

In this episode, Tanya and Carrie discuss how we are wrapping up the school year. We also talk about how to wrap up your time at a particular school and get ready to move on to your next chapter.

Past Music Teacher Coffee Talk episodes to help with the End of the Year and Closure:

Things to think about this time of year:

Finish up your curricular goals.
  • Don't be heard on yourself about where your kids are now.
  • Be realistic and don't try to cram in new material late in the year.
Include fun and different types of classes.
  • Include new and exciting songs and games.
  • Take them outside!
  • More folk dancing and movement.
  • Bring out new manipulatives or things you haven't used in a while.
  • Have stations/centers day that practices concepts taught throughout the year (Need ideas? Check out Episode #109: Learning Stations)
  • Consider an escape room themed class.
  • Blooket is a fun and engaging way to review past learning.
Planning for near year.
  • Get concerts, field trips, and other special events on the calendar.
  • Start planning for choir or other extra-curricular groups.
  • Think about basic unit/concept planning for next year.
  • If you have money left in your budget, spend that money on things you know you want next year.
Things to consider when leaving your current position:
  • Start cleaning out materials and packing up now. Give yourself daily goals of small tasks you can do each day.
  • Edit your stuff: if you haven't used it in the past 5 years, do you need to keep it?
  • If you are going to a new position in your area, ask if you can start bringing your personal materials over now so you don't have to move it twice.
  • Think about when and how to tell your students. You don't have to give a lot of details, but it's best if the news comes from you. Reassure them that they will still have music class, you care about them, and everything will be ok with them and you.
  • When you tell students is up to you, but we suggest not telling them on your very last day. Give yourself a few classes so you and the students get closure.

Know Better, Do Better

Carrie recommends listening to some amazing conversation on the Music Ed Amplified Podcast (hosted by Missy Strong). There are two episodes in the series "Whachu Think, Sis? Three Black Women's Perspectives on the Current State of Music Education."

This conversation is between Maria A. Ellis, Jasmine Fripp, and Karla Bell. Be sure to follow all of these excellent music educators!

Work Smarter, Not Harder

Tanya recommends the use of color coding with stickers. Here are a few examples:
  • If you have keyboards in a variety of brands, use colored stickers to match the keyboard to their AC adaptor.
  • Use colored washi tape to match mallets to barred instruments.

Coda

Carrie recommends the documentary Summer of Soul
Tanya recommends the TV show Russian Doll
