Episode #131: Subbing For Yourself
Upcoming Events:
Tanya will be presenting a workshop titled "How Can I Keep Them Singing: Singing Games and Activities for Older Students" on Saturday, April 22 for the Plains States Kodály Organization (PSKOR) in Kearney, Nebraska. Get more information here!
Main Theme
Carrie and Tanya talk about lesson ideas and activities for when you are subbing for yourself, meaning you are not feeling well or have low energy, but you still need to teach. Here are some ideas for lessons where students are still actively making or responding to music, but you are preserving your health, energy, and sanity.
Ideas and resources we mention:
- YouTube play along videos
- Independent instrument practice time (recorder, ukulele, keyboards, etc)
- Stations or centers (only if students have done them before)
- Music listening, appreciation, and responding
- Individual listening (give choice when possible)
- Read-along videos and recordings
- Watch live recordings
- Composition and musical exploration via technology
- Soundtrap (requires a paid subscription)
- Chrome Music Lab
- Beep Box
- Incredibox
- Groove Pizza
- Explore manipulatives for dictation and composition at a relaxed pace
- Utilize no-prep worksheets that do not require much explanation
- Consider preparing a collection of lessons and activities that are ready when you are not feeling your best:
- Videos of you or your former classes singing and playing games
- Create a homepage of websites (see Carrie's example)
- Check out Katie Wardrobe's Midnight Music site for resources for ideas
- Have worksheets ready to go (ie: Listening Glyphs)
Know Better, Do Better
Carrie talks very briefly about the origin of the banjo and the importance of knowing the history of folk music instruments. Here are some resources to learn more:
Work Smarter, Not Harder
Tanya reminds us to not wait until you have a class set of an instrument before you start using it. Consider ways you can have students in groups where one set of students is working at that particular instrument while the rest are doing a different independent activity (worksheet or an activity on their Chromebook) and then switch.
Coda
Carrie recommends watching hilarious videos by Jesus Nalgas (you can find him on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube)
Tanya recommends the podcast Unlocking Us by Brene Brown (on Spotify), particularly the episode featuring Tim Ferriss and Dax Shepard on Podcasting, Daily Practices, and the Long and Winding Path to Healing
