Upcoming Events:

September 23, 2023: Carrie will be presenting "Keep Them Singing, Keep Them Playing" for the Arizona Kodály Teachers Society in Phoenix. Find more details and register here!

Main Theme: Classroom Instruments

In this episode Tanya and Carrie talk about classroom instruments, both pitched barred instruments and non-pitched percussion. We talk about our philosophy of using instruments within a Kodály-inspired classroom, our sequence for introducing instruments, our tips for storage and organization, and our favorite resources for using classroom instruments in the elementary general music room.

Favorite resources for using classroom instruments:

Know Better, Do Better

Tanya invites us to reconsider the label of "Recorder Karate" for a rewards-based recorder curriculum as the label, images, and practice associated with this can be considered cultural appropriation. Consider instead a different label and/or color coded reward system that doesn't refer to a specific culture. Or perhaps consider playing recorder just for the joy and not attaching an external reward system or competition.

Work Smarter, Not Harder

When using digital assignments on tools such as Google Docs, Jamboard, Slides, Canva, or Seesaw, it's helpful to be in the practice of printing a few hard copies of each assignment so when a student doesn't have their technology in class, they can still complete the assignment on hard copy and you don't have to scramble in the moment to solve the problem.
