Main Theme: Hot Topics, Part 2

In this episode, Carrie and Tanya discuss more Hot Topics as suggested by listeners and past Kodaly students. A few of the topics we discuss are:
  • Balancing traditional Kodály-inspired lessons with PBL lessons.
  • How to handle students who are not able to participate in certain holiday-based lessons.
  • Tips on using and managing your sound system at school.
  • How to approach matters of DEI while working in a more conservative community.
  • Guiding students to choose appropriate movements.
Things we mention in this episode:

Know Better, Do Better

Carrie has decided to no longer use the echo song "My Aunt Came Back" due to concerns about the movements possibly pantomiming the flapping motion commonly associated with nuerodivergent people along with the use of the word "nut" in the last verse. Instead, consider any other echo songs such as "The Green Grass Grows All Around" or other echo songs found in John Feierabend's Book of Echo Songs.

Work Smarter, Not Harder

Tanya reminds us that sometimes going non-tech is best. For example, if you want to do an activity where students are identifying which rhythmic or melodic pattern they are hearing, you could simply write a few pattern choices on the board or have students hold different flashcards and have students identify which pattern it is.

Coda

Carrie recommends the album "You're the One" by Rhiannon Giddens
Tanya recommends the cover song "Funeral Singers" as performed by Sylvan Esso
