Main Theme: Marvelous Music Manipulatives

Debbie's Favorite Manipulatives:
  • Puppets and soft toys for beat keeping, rocking, singing to and with, and vocal exploration.
  • Felt staves and counters for notation, dictation, and composition activities. Debbie has a whole episode about felt staves here!
  • Hand balls for activities focused on beat, meter, and form.
Debbie's purchasing and storage tips:
  • Have your school purchase things in bulk using your music budget.
  • Go to the donation/resale shops to look for toys that can be used as manipulatives.
  • Ask for donations from your school community of things that can recycled and used in the music room (ie: stuffed animals or floaty scarves).
  • Store everything in large, labeled tubs and let the students take what they need rather than creating individual sets of everything.

Debbie will be offering a course in April of 2024 called "Marvelous Music Manipulatives." To learn more about Debbie's course on manipulatives as well as her other resources, visit Debbie's Crescendo Music Education site. Be sure to grab one of her freebies on her home page. "Hands On Music Fun" gives you a taste of what the course will be like.

Know Better, Do Better

Debbie reminds us of the importance of including indigenous perspectives in the music room. She talks about doing homework and research before including indigenous music in your classroom, and be sure to acknowledge where the song comes from and who gave you permission to share it.

Work Smarter, Not Harder

Debbie talks about intentional collaboration by working with another music teacher. Consider co-planning your units and lessons as well as sharing digital resources with a like-minded music teacher in your area!
