Main Theme? Developing the Singing Voice with Anne Mileski

About Anne:

Anne Mileski is an early childhood and elementary music educator and clinician based in Eastern Washington. She currently serves as an instructor at Eastern Washington University, and Instructor and Coordinator of Elementary/General Music at Gonzaga University, where she teaches methods courses and supervises elementary music field experiences and student teachers. She also teaches at Eastern Washington University and St. Mary’s Catholic School in Spokane Valley. As a pedagogy enthusiast, Anne is certified in Orff-Schulwerk, Kodály, Smithsonian Folkways World Music Pedagogy, Music Learning Theory Elementary General Level I, and has completed coursework in Dalcroze Eurhythmics. She is a regular clinician at local workshops, state music conferences, and has presented at both the American Orff-Schulwerk Association and Organization of American Kodály Educators national conferences. She has served on faculty for Kodály teacher education programs at the American Kodály Institute at Loyola Maryland, the Plano ISD/SMU Kodály Certification Program in Dallas, Texas, and the Bemidji State University Kodály Program. Anne also hosts The Anacrusic Podcast, where she shares inspiration and ideas for elementary music teachers, as well as co hosts the Teaching Music Tomorrow podcast with Victoria Boler. When she's not teaching music, Anne enjoys traveling and adventuring with her husband and three young children.

In this show, Anne mentions No More Pie as a great echo song to get young students singing. Consider using a plastic microphone or puppet to encourage students to sing when it's their turn.

Know Better, Do Better

Anne recommends the song collection First Steps in Global Music compiled by Karen Howard. We appreciate how this book includes geographical and cultural context about each song in the book along with a pronunciation guide.

Work Smarter, Not Harder

Carrie recommends keeping a paper copy of your class lists and/or seating charts that you can grab when you have guest teachers. This is also very helpful if your electronic grade book is not available (you forgot to charge, you left your device at home, power goes out, etc) so you can write down attendance, notes, grades, and other necessary information in the moment.

Coda

Tanya recommends visiting art museums in your community.
