Main Theme: OAKE 2025 Conference Reflection
In this episode, Carrie and Tanya talk about their takeaways and favorite moments from the 2025 Organization of American Kodály Educators (OAKE) national conference that was held in Chicago in March, 2025.
Things we mention in this episode:
Know Better, Do Better
Tanya talks about the classroom goals for building cultural empathy that Larena Code Boyle shared in her demo session at OAKE. These goals were taken from the framework that Karen Howard presents in her fantastic book Realizing Diversity: An Equity Framework for Music Education. It was helpful to see how those goals can come into action in a real classroom setting though Larena's session.
Work Smarter, Not Harder
Carrie talks about a strategy for improvisation on barred instruments she saw Becca Buck demonstrate in her session at OAKE. We used a known rhythm from a chant and played that rhythm just on C. Then we were asked to play the rhythm on C and D. Then repeated with bars C, D, and E. Finally, we were asked to improvise on C pentatone. It was a simple, effective strategy to get us improvising with a known rhythm.
Coda
Tanya recommends the song Doubt by Mary J. Blige and Taylor Swift
Carrie recommends the West Music Podcast: Play Now, Play For Life - specifically episodes 3, 4, and 5 with feature OAKE leaders Tom Michalek, Lauren Hirsh, and Leigh Ann Garner.
