Main Theme: Life-Long Learning with Katrina Hedrick

Katrina Hedrick is committed to increasing equity and access to music education for underserved communities through helping students cultivate their personal musical collage as music ambassadors, producers, and performers. Her approach supports each individual’s interest, learning style, and identity. Katrina has been an active music educator since 2010 as a private instructor, in summer camps, and as secondary public school music teacher in high-impact rural and urban Colorado communities. As Adjunct Professor of Music Education, Katrina oversees the Elementary Music Education portion of the CSU’s Music Education Undergraduate Degree and serves as Interim Program Director of the Colorado Kodály Institute. Katrina is also the Program Director of Spur Music Lab in Denver’s CSU Campus, a community outreach and teacher education center, and additionally supervises student teachers for Metropolitan State University. She is an active author, agent for social justice, multi-instrumentalist, and clinician for educators across the United States.

Things we mention in this episode:

Know Better, Do Better

Katrina talks about the importance of being humble and vulnerability with your students by modeling the practice of owning up to mistakes you make. We can show our students that mistakes are inevitable and we can also be accountable for when we do make a mistake.

Work Smarter, Not Harder

Tanya shares a tip for creating practice tracks for choir. Find a good recording of your piece on YouTube and create a practice track by recording yourself singing along with one part, and then repeat with the other parts. That way students can hear their part highlighted while also getting the context of the entire piece.

Coda

Tanya recommends the book Deep Cuts by Holly Brickley

Carrie recommends the album "Nightmare Revisited," a cover album of songs from "The Nightmare Before Christmas"
